Kyle Jackson at Nocturne 2010

Kyle B. Jackson

I paint for you Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1960 to a chemical engineer and a textile artist, Kyle grew up with three siblings, in a variety of culturally rich communities that nurtured his creative inclinations. The family lived in such iconic places as San Francisco, USA in the heyday of the late 1960’s, and later The Hague, in the Netherlands, where Kyle, at the age of 15, received his first formal art training in photography at the Vrije Academie.

Kyle Jackson in1985 Kyle’s interest to develop an artistic practice was largely inspired by meeting Andy Warhol at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1974. Kyle came to Nova Scotia 25 years ago to attend art school and has been an active member of the vibrant local art scene ever since; as an artist, a patron and a youth educator. Notably, he co-owned and operated the Soho Kitchen, a veritable folk art museum, for 18 years at the original location on Granville Street. He was also a co-founder of the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival, held annually in Lunenburg.

Flowers Primarily he is recognized as a painter and folk artist, but has explored many different forms and genres. His recent works demonstrate ideas of expansion and idealism evidenced both in concept and an expanded aesthetic based on traditional folk art style and vernacular. Many of Kyle’s lively cityscapes have been purchased for public art, joining the already impressive body of work on display throughout Halifax.

    Nocturne, 2010
The slow emergency of global warming and sea-level rise affect all coastal communities; we are all in the same boat. The Same Boat Horn is a large, interactive sculpture that is a continuation of Kyle Jackson’s smaller Lovehorns.
This piece enables the public to call out a warning/rescue message over the sea and connect to other coastal dwellers around the world. Using muscle power to blow the horn, one creates a voice that sends out a message like raising a white flag. As the survivors on Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa, we can call out for salvation into the dark night.

    Throughout downtown Halifax Nocturne, 2009
For 24 years Kyle Jackson has been painting from a bird’s eye view of Halifax. For one night, Jackson will use a stray dog view down on the street, creating six paintings in six hours. The Jackson painting vehicle art team will move a temporary mini studio to six locations to allow the artist to capture the swirling city of Halifax during the Nocturne event. Similar to an old school circus tattoo artist, Jackson will paint in public affecting and being affected by the street. This will be true street art created live, on the run and without a net.

Bright City Projection is the projection of two still images of large Kyle Jackson Halifax paintings onto the city itself. The images will be at street level and engage with pedestrians as they move through the city image. This interaction of the public within a colorful painting projected on the side of the city’s art school is a reflection back onto the wall of the institution that nurtured the initial creation of these paintings.
Kyle Jackson is a recognized painter/sculptor working with a distinct colorful three dimensional style that explores Nova Scotia regionalism.
